Chapter 13

Questions: Jess remarks that Leslie took him from the cow pasture to Terabithia and turned him into a king. What does Jess mean by this statement? Explain in your own words.

Chapter 12

Questions: When Bill tells Jess that Leslie loved him, he also starts to say something else. Finish what 
                    Bill was going to say, "She told me once that if it weren't for you...."
                    What does Jess mean when he says that Leslie has left him stranded like an astronaut on
                     the moon?

Enrichment: Imagine Jess had chosen to describe his feelings through his art work rather than throwing his art supplies in the creek. Pretend to be Jess and create a piece of art that shows what you think he must have been feeling during that time.

Chapter 11

Questions: Why does Jess start running when he hears the "news". What do you think he is running
                    from?
                    Do you think Jess could have done anything to prevent Leslie's death? If so, what?

Enrichment: To be done with a partner: Pretend that you are going to interview one of the characters from your book. Each partner should choose a role (Interviewer or Character) Make up a list of questions that you would like to ask, and make sure your partner is able to answer these questions as if they were that character. Video your interview.

Chapter 10

Questions: Do you like Leslie? What specifically, do you like about her?

Enrichment: Miss Edmunds helped and encouraged Jess to realize his talents. Think of a teacher who has helped or encouraged you. Create an award for that teacher. It may be a certificate, a poem, a letter, or a 3-d model (use your imagination). Be sure to tell why that teacher encouraged you. "Awards" will be given to those teachers, so please take your time to make it neat and attractive.

Chapter 9

Questions: What do you think Judy means when she tells Jess and Leslie that she is stuck?
                    What is the "flaw" that Jess recognizes in his own character and doesn't like?

Enrichment: Most people have experienced fear in their lives. Make a list of ten things that you are afraid of placing the things you fear most at the top of your list. Compare your fears with those of your classmates. Discuss the potential of fear to both help you and hinder you.

Questions: How is Easter different this year for Jess' family?
                   Why does Leslie say she would like to go to church with Jess' family?

Enrichment: Create a wordle to describe one of the characters from the book. Use your describing words to write a poem about that characters. Read it to one of your classmates.

Questions: Compare the relationship between Leslie and her father and Jess and his father.
                   Who does Leslie discover crying in the bathroom stall? Why is she crying?

Enrichment: Pretend that you are a newspaper columnist such as "Dear Abby" or "Ann Landers". Have a classmate send you a letter describing a problem they are having. Answer the letter giving them advice on various ways they might resolve their problem.

Questions: Why doesn't Jess ask his dad for art supplies if that's what he truly wants?
                    What's one of the best gifts you've every received? Why? Who gave it to you?

                  letter to Janice Avery? Why?

Enrichment: Pretend that you are writing a letter to the author, Katherine Paterson. What are some of the questions you might like to ask her? What are some of the things you would like to tell her about the book?

                   How is the way Leslie is dressed on the first day of school different from the other students?
